It might seem hard to believe that anyone would be able to eat fast food daily without gaining weight. But believe it or not, one man went 3 months and actually lost a substantial amount of weight. A science teacher in Ohio, John Cisna with the help of his students proved that you can be healthy while eating fast food daily.

Inspired by “Super-Size Me”

This experiment was inspired by the documentary “Super-Size Me”. This experiment had a very different outcome then the documentary. In the documentary “Super-Size me, activist Morgan Spurlock ate McDonalds for 30 days straight. Spurlock ate approximately 5,000 calories daily.

The outcome was horrific. He suffered emotional physical and emotional damage. The film did have some positive outcomes. Not long after the film came out, McDonalds took steps to make their menu healthier. They added more fruits and vegetables and took other steps to change its image. Substitutions became available. John and his students also documented his three month journey.

Cisna’s experiment sparked the interest of a local franchise owner. The franchise owner agreed to provide Cisna’s meals at no cost. Most people would assume that John ate salads for the three months of his experiment. This statement would be false. He actually ate a variety of different items off the menu including big macs and French fries. He did however follow a strict 2,000 calorie diet. He had his students plan his meals for him. For this they referenced the McDonald’s online nutritional guide.
Although he followed the 2,000 calorie diet he was able to eat meals that are typical to most. He ate three meals daily. In the morning he would have a two egg white breakfast sandwich. Often he would also eat these and oatmeal. If he ate a heavier meal later in the day he would balance it with something lighter later and vice versa.

He also indulged in desert from time to time. He ate ice cream sundaes and other items available on the menu. Prior to John Cisna’s experiment he did not exercise or monitor his calorie intake. Other than following the menu prepared for him, he also exercised daily. He walked 45 minutes daily. The exercise helped increase his metabolism. Increasing his metabolism allowed him to burn calories faster.

Experiment Results

The results of the experiment were amazing. He lost a total of 37 pounds. This experiment proves that you can still indulge in fast foods and lose weight as long as you are mindful of your calorie intake. He also lowered his blood pressure from 249 to 170. He didn’t just lose weight, he became healthier. In addition to his weight loss and lower blood pressure, he also lowered his LDL cholesterol level. LDL cholesterol is also known as bad cholesterol. He lowered this from 173 to 113.

What we learned from Cisna’s experiment

Cisna stated, “I can eat any food at McDonald’s I want as long as I’m smart for the rest of the day with what I balance it out with. He believes that it is the choices we make that determine the outcome. Many different media outlets have written articles regarding Cisna’s experiment.

Many of them are reevaluating previous views regarding fast foods. After all the outcome of the scenario does contradict what we know about fast food. Although the outcome was positive, Cisna took important steps to monitor his diet and increase his metabolism. If Cisna had not taken these steps then he would not have had such positive results. His weight loss should not be attributed to McDonalds or fast food. It should be attributed to his lifestyle change.

He had not exercised before but he started. His metabolism increased and he started taking in less calories than he needed daily. His success is the result of good decisions. Tips for following the Cisna Method for Weight Loss

  • If you do eat fast food you should try to balance your diet.
  • If you eat a larger meal you should eat light later.
  • It is ok to indulge every now and then.
  • You should take the time to exercise daily.

Cisna has proved that anyone could eat anything and lose weight as long as they are smart about it. Be mindful of what you put into your body and you will be pleased with the results.
